Christantus Uche Sparks Dominant Crystal Palace Triumph at Shelbourne.
Even though embarking on their maiden continental campaign, Crystal Palace are learning at a rapid pace. Without star figures like striker Jean-Philippe Mateta and defender Daniel Muñoz, the London club left Dublin with a commanding result that all but guarantees them a spot in the Conference League qualifying rounds.
A further three points in their next fixture against Finland's KuPS should be sufficient to seal straight passage to the last 16, especially following a prior stumble against Strasbourg.
Fringe Players Seize the Opportunity
This match provided a chance for some of Palace's lesser-used players to impress. Christantus Uche, making only his second start after arriving on loan from Getafe, opened the account with a clinical goal. Striker Eddie Nketiah contributed a second, scoring for the second consecutive match.
A Shelbourne team that had concluded their domestic season proved outmatched against a largely rotated Palace lineup. The visitors were already weakened by the reports that Mateta and Muñoz are sidelined with knee injuries.
Control Asserted from the Outset
Despite torrential rain in Dublin, Palace quickly established dominance. A slick move in the 11th minute, sparked by Daichi Kamada's incisive pass, allowed Nketiah to lay on Uche for a straightforward finish.
Youngster Adam Wharton went close minutes later, fizzing a powerful effort over the bar. Nketiah subsequently claimed for a penalty after bursting into the area, but the official dismissed the appeals.
Ex-Arsenal man did not have wait long to get his goal, prodding home from close range after Uche's effort had hit the post.
The home side were hanging on desperately. Defender Kameron Ledwidge was fortunate to escape a booking for a couple of robust challenges on Yeremy Pino, before Chris Richards rattled the crossbar with a powerful header from a corner.
Pino Seals the Game
The match was as good as over eight minutes from half-time. Yeremy Pino weaved past some comically weak challenges before calmly slotting a shot past keeper Wessel Speel to make it 3-0.
Following the break, manager Oliver Glasner seized the opportunity to withdraw several individuals like Kamada and Wharton. Substitute Romain Esse came close to scoring his very first touch, but saw his shot blocked.
Esse was desperately unlucky later on, seeing one attempt crash off each posts before being clasped on the line. Uche also blazed a sitter of a chance, showing there is still scope for improvement in his game.
The only concern for Palace was a late injury to Justin Devenny, who was forced off. This allowed 17-year-old forward Benji Casey to earn his first-team debut, rounding off an otherwise perfect evening for the traveling side.
