Super Typhoon Fung-wong Strikes the Philippines: Two Fatalities and Large-Scale Evacuations Confirmed

The Philippines was severely impacted by Super Typhoon Fung-wong, resulting in at least two people dead and forced the evacuation of over a million residents.

Authorities stated that the powerful weather system caused extensive flash flooding, coastal inundation, landslides, and destructive high-velocity gusts, leading to the relocation of 1.4 million people nationwide.

Extensive Damage and Rescue Efforts

In the town of Pandan, a severely affected area, disaster response teams recorded floodwaters reaching the tops of houses and residences washed out by strong flows.

Our team rescued 14 individuals who were trapped on the roof surrounded by water in a low-lying neighbourhood,” a disaster-mitigation officer explained. “A father also called in panic, saying his home’s roof was at risk of tearing away due to the storm. We saved him and four relatives.”

As of Monday morning, officials announced at least two deaths: a drowning victim in Catanduanes and another who died when her house collapsed in eastern Samar.

Typhoon Strength and Forecast

The super typhoon was downgraded to a severe tropical storm early Monday while moving over the main island, home to the national capital.

According to the state weather service, its maximum winds decreased from 115 mph to 102 mph, but gusts peaked at more than 275 km/h.

The storm system is expected to lose strength while heading north toward Taiwan.

Relief and Assessment

The national disaster response service indicated efforts were ongoing to evaluate destruction to infrastructure and homes.

Approximately thousands of shelters have been opened to temporarily house tens of thousands of households.

Recent Context and Climate Impact

Fung-wong struck just days after Typhoon Kalmaegi, which killed at least 224 people with dozens unaccounted for prior to advancing to Vietnam, where it killed five.

Searches for the missing persons had to be suspended on Sunday over risks for rescue workers.

Global warming is making cyclones more intense and common. Fung-wong is the twenty-first storm to hit the Philippines in 2025.

Researchers have found that the frequency of super-typhoons striking the islands has risen by more than 100% in the past twenty years.

Global assessments indicate that severe weather events result in an average of US$3.5 million in losses to the country every year.

The Philippine president declared a state of emergency last week because of the extensive devastation from the prior typhoon and anticipated impacts from the new storm.
