The fast bowler Poised for a Major Role in Iconic Rivalry

Australian cricket captain

The pace bowler has claimed 309 wickets in 71 five-day games with an stellar bowling average.

Australia's chair of selectors George Bailey has declared that pace spearhead Cummins will have a crucial role in this winter's England-Australia contest.

There were concerns that the veteran bowler might be unavailable due to a ongoing back issue that remained unresolved.

Earlier indications from the Australian camp suggested no official announcement had been made regarding his involvement, with the extended contest kicking off on November 21 in the WACA.

Bailey expressed that the captain is progressing and remained hopeful about the likelihood of taking part.

"We know that the clock is ticking and there are permutations involved, not just the physical problem, but additional elements," he commented.

"The outlook is good. [We are] really confident that he's going to play a significant role. With luck starting in Perth. Should that not happen, we'll reassess."

Past Concerns

He was sidelined the white-ball matches against both Asian and Trans-Tasman rivals last month after scans revealed a lumbar bone stress.

There is a track record of recurring issues, with flare-ups in multiple past seasons leading to absences from three Australian summers in a short span.

Cummins stated he would be proactive in his approach in his rehabilitation process to secure his spot for the Ashes.

The selector indicated that there was no confirmation if Cummins had begun bowling as part of his recovery but conceded it was "getting tight" for him to recover fully for the opener.

Contingency Plans

In case of absence, ex-skipper Smith will assume leadership.

The talented all-rounder was withdrawn recently from the national team for their ODI contests against the Asian giants as a safety move because of soreness in his side.

He labeled it as a "small issue and mentioned that Green will play in the domestic first-class competition, so will be "in a good place to deliver overs."

"Extensive planning has gone into creating the schedule for him to participate for the first Test as an all-rounder," he elaborated.

"He was only going to play the initial matches regardless. How he handles the willow in shorter formats, even if it just sets him back for a short period, we opted to adopt a safer strategy."
