The Former President's Progressive Warning Overlooks The Continent's True Danger: Technological Stagnation.

The recent US national security strategy presents a misguided view of the European Union. It claims that unrestrained immigration and so-called "progressive" agendas pose an grave risk to European civilization. Yet, this argument is based on a serious misreading of the reality. The actual danger confronting the EU is not cultural but technological and economic backwardness.

The Stark Economic Gap Separating the US and Europe

Statistics reveal a stark contrast. From 2008 and 2023, American economic output surged by eighty-seven percent, while a mere thirteen and a half percent increase for the European Union. During this period, European income per person fell from 76.5% to just half of the American figure. Strikingly, even Mississippi now boasts a higher per capita income than several leading EU nations like France and Italy.

Currently, roughly half of the world’s 50 largest technology firms are US-based, while a mere four are European.

The Innovation Deficit: A Critical Problem

This widening disparity stems from stronger efficiency gains in the US, fueled by technological innovation and higher total factor productivity. The landscape of world technology dominance is decidedly American. In the last five decades, 241 US firms have scaled into companies valued at more than $10bn, versus only fourteen in Europe.

This disparity prompts a vital question: As the competition for tomorrow's sectors like AI, semiconductors, and fusion energy, what is the EU stand? Experts widely agree it is essentially a two-horse race involving the US and China, with European nations entering at a significant disadvantage.

Root Causes of Europe's Innovation Gap

A number of key factors explain this technological divide.

  • Financing Ecosystem: The United States has a far deeper and more dynamic network for funding startups. Europe has yet to establish a true unified investment market, which caps the scale of new firms.
  • Regulatory Fragmentation: Excessive and fragmented regulation hamper Europe. A American entrepreneur can launch a product under a single regulatory framework to access a consumer base of over 330 million. The EU, despite a larger population size, is divided among twenty-seven different national regimes, creating huge internal barriers.
  • Mindset Differences: Views on risk-taking differ sharply. In some EU nations, business failure was once viewed with penalties, whereas in the US, it is often considered a badge of experience.
  • Military Investment: The US benefits from a tightly woven academic-military-industrial complex. The continent's long-term lack of spending in defense has eroded its ability in breakthrough innovation.

The Road Ahead: Reasons for Hopefulness

In spite of these hurdles, there are causes for hope. Policymakers are growing more conscious of the severe threat and have begun to advance substantial change. Notable reports on European competitiveness and the internal market highlight the need for sweeping changes.

Given appropriate incentives and rule changes, Europe's strengths might enable far greater degrees of business-led breakthroughs.

The continent still possesses significant strengths: high-quality workforce, top-tier education systems, and premier research institutions. Coupled with a vast domestic consumer base and high savings rates, these elements could trigger a surge of venture creation.

Importantly, even if the EU does not take the lead in developing next-generation tech, it can still dramatically increase productivity by adopting and adapting advancements from elsewhere.

A Critical Juncture

The European Union now stands at a critical moment. As the saying goes, economic erosion often happens "slowly, then all at once". So far, the continent's technological decline has been gradual. But, without decisive action to address its structural weaknesses, today's slow erosion could turn into a rapid and permanent loss of world influence.
