On his first day in office, Zohran Mamdani committed to “reimagine” the metropolis, promising “a fresh chapter” and an bold beginning to his tenure.

A Historic Leader

The 34-year-old figure, who just a year ago remained a relatively obscure state assemblyman, now stands as the city's first Muslim mayor. He additionally marked a milestone by being the first to be take the oath of office using the Qur'an.

• A rent freeze for nearly 1 million households
• A trial program of city-run grocery stores

The projected $10 billion cost of these initiatives may prove difficult to fund. Mamdani has pledged to increase levies for the richest residents and big business. However, as a municipality under the authority of the state government, he will require the backing of Governor Kathy Hochul.

Managing Political Challenges

The new mayor also faces apprehension from some Jewish New Yorkers concerned about his past comments regarding Israel. Sensitivities were highlighted during the transition when a appointments director resigned over offensive past comments.

Mamdani has attempted to address these tensions by convincing Police Commissioner Jessica Tisch to stay on, preventing the appearance of losing a top Jewish official.

On the national stage, former President Donald Trump has labeled Mamdani a “socialist” and warned of withholding government money. Despite this, a prior meeting between the two was reportedly surprisingly productive.

The Basic Challenges of Leadership

Traditionally, New York mayors are judged on their ability in delivering basic services: trash collection, curbing the rat infestation, repairing potholes, and making sure smooth transit operation.

Outgoing Mayor Eric Adams touted his team's public safety record, pointing to historically low numbers of homicides and gun violence in 2025, with 301 homicides recorded.

As his term begins, Mamdani and his wife will move from their Astoria apartment to the historic mayoral residence. The outgoing mayor offered a unusual warning about a reputed resident spirit in the home, which allegedly only haunts those who fail to “do right by the city.”

Mamdani ended his speech with a simple statement: “The work has only just begun.”
